why 'proud to be an indian' ?

The Hindu has a thought provoking article on Isarel's militarism. The most striking line in that article is in the first paragraph.

AS a Jew, I've been asked if I'm ashamed at what Israel has been doing in Lebanon. And the answer I give is that I am disgusted, I am angry, I am appalled, but, no, I am not ashamed. Why should I be? I bear no personal responsibility for this criminal activity — except, of course, in so far as I fail to take whatever action I can to stop it.

If you are on any of the mailing list or if you have had an email id for at least one year, you might have received an email titled "jai hind" or "proud to be an indian" around 15th August. The email has a bunch of questions and answers like

Q. Who is the creator of Pentium chip (needs no introduction as 90% of the today's computers run on it)?
A. Vinod Dahm
Q. Who is the founder and creator of Hotmail (Hotmail is world's No.1 web based email program)?
A. Sabeer Bhatia

and so on.

The email ends thus

Say proudly, I AM AN INDIAN. Please forward this email to all known INDIANS...............

I have always been baffled by this chest beating. As an Indian, why should I take credit for the success of Sabeer Bhatia, Azim Premji and Vinod Dahm - what contribution did I make to their success ?

I am totally unpatriotic.

  1. I don't think that's patriotism. It's racism more than anything else. Most of those people are actually not even Indian citizens. They just have Indian ancestry. So what these people are actually saying is that we've got to be proud not of our country or the opportunities it affords but that we have Indian blood. Which I find more repugnant than patriotism.

I totally agree i think it is racism. These people who foward this email are just celebrating their race. Many of these Indians like you mentioned dont even consider themseleves Indian.(rather Indian Americans)
Be proud of something that has been done for India.
The worst case are kalpana chawla(she got in because she mairried a foreingner thats all not even on her capabilities) and amrtya sen.
I think i will be proud if we win against the cola companies.

Hi Yes I am proud to be an Indian. I agree we don't have World Class facilities but this is the result of more than 150 years colonial rule in India. Britishers didn't even allow us to make hand spun cotton fabric , they even taxed salt. And Today We are launching satellites , Next year you we see us landing on Moon , We have the most inexpensive Super Computer, Our Software professionals have swept the American IT industry and so much more .... and All this in just 60 years. Indians have shown that once they are given opportunity they can outshine the brightest eg Vinod Dham , Sabber Bhaitia , LN Mittal , Amartya Sen etc . You just wait and Watch ... I am sure you will get the Taste Of India with in your life time in truly Indian Istyle....Jai Hind

WAT kind or racism u r talking abt ?
s it racism to be proud of something that our fellow indians did ?
if u can do then do something , we will be proud of you too. everyone wants to do something, but there r certain circumstances that they cant do wat they want to make themselves feel proud n their nation to feel proud. if we have a name in world it is all due to the contributions of these people not because of u n me.

  3. Although I am very happy to have been among those fortunate people who have been spared from such emails I have made an observation that most people that would have been featured in such emails are those individuals, majority of whom are not living in India or they attained success while they were living outside our beloved country.
This is Pop-Patriotism nothing more! Just like after 9/11 even the not-caring for the world kind of people were adamant on proving they are patriotic by any means they saw most fitting to them, from T-Shirts with slogans to extreme actions like killing innocent Sikh men thinking they were Al-Qaida. Similarly people in our country forward emails or forward messages they received via SMS. Such behaviour is not only ridiculous in a unique way, it's rather sad and pathetic.
What happens to their "proud feeling" when it's not the Independence day weekend or some other national holiday? Perhaps you should reply to these people (not every damn individual, those you care about) and perhaps teach them the true meaning of patriotism, or just ask them if such forwards or phone mesages ever accomplished anything?

  4. @Gavri & @ Chad - you guys are correct. The people mentioned are of Indian origin rather than being Indian citizens.

  5. I totally agree.
It doesnt make sense just to say that "I Am Patriotic"... Happy Independence Day
    so on and so forth.

The question is why should I be happy? Have I done anything towards it? 90% of the population would say - No, I havent.

It makes me proud as Indians lot of people made success. We personally might not have done any thing but it gives inspiration to somany people. One should read the article by Dr.A.P.J.Kalam to see why we should be proud that our fellow Indian made an indentation in the history. I am very proud that I am an Indian and it gives me pleasure to see any fellow Indian succeed in their dreams and vision.

Well, here's an idea. If people were so 'proud,' why would they move out of the shithole they call a country? 'Omg he said it!' 'The worlds gana burn!'

No, you know what, Im an immigrant too. And I can say that we all moved to American and Canada becouse it was heaven compared to where we came from. There is no way you can call India a world power (hell 75% of the population's in poverty), and we're still just beggining to build up cities.

If you moved out of India, it was becouse you knew it wasn't as good as anothe country so why be proud of it when you could be proud of the country that took you under their wing and basically brought you up. Im sorry but I dont really thing India has done anything for me but provide empty hopes and crushed dreams.

  8. Dude - get a grip. I doubt if there is a correlation between religion and GDP. Whatever historic GDP India had, does not change the fact that its GDP is in dumps right now.

I not know, why this foolish question from 2006 is still running.

Lets see some famous quotes from some famous persons about India.

We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made.
    - Albert Einstein

India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend and the great grand mother of tradition.
    - Mark Twain

If there is one place on the face of earth where all dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India.
    - French Scholar Romain Rolland

India conquered and dominated China culturally for 20 centuries without ever having to send a single soldier across her border.
    - Hu Shih (Former Chinese ambassador to USA)

So, why can't we proud on being Indian. And about NRI's and Indian working in other countries, we rank first sending money in Home.

I feel proud whenever I see Indians doing good, I feel proud seeing their name among working peoples.

I am proud Indian. Jai Hind

  9. Sure most of the Indians haven't contributed to this directly, but the cultural heritage and the society has a huge role in the success of the achievers.

Tagging nationalism as racism is the job of the anti-national elements who don't want India to progress, prosper, and flourish.

Here are some more facts to make Indians proud:

problem comes out wid d fact dat when we r supposed to use our hearts,we use our minds and vice-versa.
I personally believe dat india is not a poor country but its citizens r poor due to d vicious democracy-poverty-bureaucracy triangle.
    n wat i was saying as d HEART-MIND DILEMMA,can b observed by u,too!
we should take our history by our mind, but we look at d matter with a lot of emotions, needless to mention all those religious and class-caste oriented rhetorics.
we should deal our relations(whether family, friendly or whatever sort of),we quickly use our minds.
the same problem, when accompanied with a large mass of like thinking, causes a system to dominantly exist in a society already busy in bothering about a number of other IMPORTANT ISSUES(FAMILY BUSINESS,U KNOW).
Those who call india names FOR GRANTED,must remember dat these r we who r setting d priority list for our nation,
FINALLY I ASK A QUESTION-FOR HOW MANY OF US,D NAXALITE problem IS GOING TO BE AN ISSUE IN FORTH COMING ELECTIONS?(must b honest)
